On this full day photography and wildlife excursion to the picturesque Chiloé Island, with its old customs and peculiar villages, boats and churches, we’ll take a boat trip to have close views of a mixed colony of Magellanic and Humboldt penguins, plus some marine waterfowl like Flightless Steamer Duck and Kelp Goose and some marine mammals and other wildlife. Later we’ll visit a bay, which is an important stop for migrating shorebirds. This trip includes private transportation and the services of an experienced guide.

This tour is highly recommended for cruise passengers with restricted time at the port of Puerto Montt.

Full day tour (8-10 hours) from Puerto Montt, Chile • Available from September 2013 through March 2014.

Chiloe Island • Birding & Photo | Day Tour | Trip Code PMC02

Book this trip, reserve space now!

Today we will take a ferry across the Chacao Strait to visit the wonderful Chiloe Island, a magical realm with its own traditions, customs, legends, cuisine and music where time has stood still since the first Spaniard settlers arrived and mixed with the native people back in the XVI (16th) century.

Picturesque agricultural and maritime landscapes, colorful and unique stilt houses, fishermen’s boats and wooden churches provide with plenty of subjects for landscape photography, everything framed in beautiful and dramatic natural settings.

This green island is populated by scattered villages and small towns where people still build houses, churches and boats using materials and ancient techniques passed from one generation to the next, and live off fishing, collecting seafood and cultivating crops like potatoes, of which this island is one of the main centers of origin and dispersion in the world, with dozens of varieties grown here.

Once in the island we’ll drive to the little fisherman’s cove of Puñihuil, where we’ll board a boat to the nearby islets that are home to several species of seabirds and marine waterfowl like Rock Cormorant, Kelp Goose and Flightless Steamer Duck, and especially, the only known mixed colony of both Humboldt and Magellanic penguins.

Marine mammals like South American Sea Lion and Marine Otter are regulars here as well, and the approach to wildlife from the water and the low eye-level from the boat are ideal for wildlife photography.

Later, on our way back, we’ll visit Caulin Bay, an important stopover for flocks of migrating shorebirds like Hudsonian Godwit and Black Skimmer.
